Biography

Dr. Schrader’s primary field of study and research interests are neuroscience and neuropharmacology. In the past, this included mechanisms antipsychotic drug action and molecular functions of the D2 Dopamine Receptor. Currently, his research has shifted to cerebral small vessel diseases (CSVD) and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Disorders, with a particular focus on Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA). This work has included proteomic analysis of CSVD animal models using protein mass spectroscopy for elucidation of disease mechanisms and diagnostic biomarker discovery, and now focuses on contributions of immune cells to neurodegeneration and vascular damage in AD and vascular dementias.

Joe Schrader is a research assistant professor of biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences. After earning his Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology at URI, he spent a year as a visiting assistant professor in cell biology at Salve Regina University. He has regularly lectured at the URI College of Pharmacy and serves as a mentor in the Bachelor of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences program.
