Chemical and in-vivo assays combine in new algorithm to quantify potential neuroprotection from medicinal plant extracts

c-elegans-100x100Extracts from medicinal plants have long been used in traditional medicine practices, and may have great potential as sources of therapeutic compounds to treat neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease. A recent paper in Neurochemistry International from Ryan Institute faculty member Navindra Seeram and colleagues lays out a method to assess these extracts for chemical and biological activity relevant to neurodegenerative disease.
